    As a part of a master’s thesis, a 2D-lidar (laser scanner) has been installed on a surface vessel CS-Saucer in one of the Laboratories at NTNU, with the purpose of performing autonomous exploration. The exploration is performed autonomously, and the system has no prior information about the environment it is exploring. The system is installed on the Robot Operating System (ROS), a flexible platform with a large open-source community. This platform has made it possible to implement tools familiar within the robotics community such as algorithms for performing simultaneous localization and mapping. A new Master’s thesis further investigating the possibilities of this setup is currently being conducted. -System is run on the Robot Operating System. -Mapping and SLAM by the use of the ROS node Hector Slam -Finding setpoint from chosen path, changing speed, controlsystem and more performed by seperate ROS-nodes. -Map is imported from Hector Slam to MATLAB, and processed by a SimuLink node. Planning and pathgeneration is performed in MATLAB -Exploration strategy: Frontier based exploration -Path generation: A Star path algorithm. (With multiple goal nodes and node connection distance of 4 ) Hardware: RPLidar, RaspberryPi 2, Arduino Mega, 3 Torpedo 800 motors, 3 Graupner thrusters. 3 Marine 30 ESC (motorcontrollers), 3 Graupner Servos, Battery Project performed at Department of Marine Technology ,Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
